MDF vs particle board vs solid wood for office furniture

A simple comparison of MDF, particle board and solid wood for office and home furniture: strength, finish, moisture, weight and cost.

When you get quotes for office furniture, the biggest price difference often comes from the board inside, not the finish you see. Here is what the three common options really mean.

MDF (medium density fibreboard)

MDF is made from fine wood fibres pressed with resin into a dense, even board. Its surface is very smooth, so laminates, high-gloss sheets and paint look clean on it. It machines well, so it is good for shaped edges, grooves and inlaid metal strips.

  • Good for: table tops, fronts, reception counters, high-gloss and marble finishes.
  • Watch out for: water on unsealed edges. Good edge banding solves this.

Particle board

Particle board is made from larger wood chips pressed with resin. It is lighter on the budget and fine for many parts of office furniture when it is covered with laminate and edge-banded properly.

  • Good for: cabinet sides, shelves, workstation panels and budget projects.
  • Watch out for: holding screws when moved often, and moisture. Use quality boards and hardware.

Solid wood

Solid wood such as sheesham or diyar is strong, can be repaired and re-polished, and has a natural grain no sheet can copy. It costs more and can move with changes in humidity, so it needs proper seasoning and joinery.

  • Good for: frames, legs, edges, classic furniture, beds and doors.
  • Watch out for: price, weight and seasonal movement if the wood is not well dried.

What we usually recommend

For most offices, MDF tops and fronts with a laminate or marble finish, quality board for the carcass, proper edge banding and good hardware give the best balance of looks, strength and price. For classic or heavy-use pieces, we add solid wood where it matters.

Whatever you choose, ask your maker which board is used where, and get it written on the quote. We always do.

See how these materials come together in our office furniture, or ask us which option fits your budget.
