"What is the price of an office table?" is the first question most people ask us. Two tables that look alike in a photo can be far apart in price, because of what is inside them and how they are made. This guide explains what decides the cost, so you can compare quotes properly and get an exact price quickly.
What decides the price
| Factor | Lower cost | Higher cost |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 4 x 2 ft staff or manager table | 7 x 3.5 ft director table |
| Shape | Straight table | L-shaped with side return, or a curved front |
| Board | Particle board carcass | MDF throughout, solid wood edges |
| Finish | Plain laminate | High-gloss marble sheet, veneer or leather inlay |
| Metal work | No trim | Gold or silver strips, metal legs or frame |
| Storage | Open, no drawers | Lockable drawers, cabinets, CPU and file space |
| Hardware | Basic runners and hinges | Soft-close runners, good hinges and locks |
Size and shape
A bigger top needs more board and stronger support underneath. An L-shaped table adds a whole second unit, usually with cabinets, so it costs noticeably more than a straight table of the same width. A curved or boat-shaped front takes more cutting and edge work than a straight one.
Board and finish
The board inside is where cheap quotes usually save money. MDF gives a smoother surface and holds screws better than particle board; our MDF vs particle board guide explains the difference. On top of the board, plain laminate is the most affordable finish, while high-gloss marble sheets, veneers and leather inlays cost more and need more careful work.
Metal strips, legs and frames
Gold and silver strips are set into grooves cut in the panels, so every strip adds material and labour. Decorative gold legs and metal frames add to the cost, and they change the look of a table completely.
Storage and hardware
Each drawer needs runners, a front, a box and sometimes a lock. A side return with cabinets can cost as much as a small table on its own. Soft-close runners and good hinges cost more at the start and keep drawers working for years.
Delivery and fitting
Large tables are delivered in parts and assembled on site. Upper floors without a lift, narrow stairs and long distances can add to the delivery cost. Ask whether delivery and fitting are included in the quote.
Why the cheapest quote can cost more
- Thin or low-grade board that sags or swells
- Edges glued by hand that start lifting
- Strips stuck on the surface instead of set into the panel
- Drawers on cheap runners that jam within months
When you compare quotes, ask each maker to write down the board, the finish, the hardware and what is included. Then you are comparing like with like.
